ICEMAN Cold Air Intake - This is currently the most popular intake set up because of its flexibility in filter positioning. The intake is available in a "Competition" set up, which utilizes a 2 piece ABS plastic intake tract that can be configured so that the filter element is route inside the engine bay or more aggressively underneath the front headlights. The advantage of routing the air filter away from the engine bay is so the high temperatures do not affect the density of the intake charge, resulting in more power. The drawback is that the filter is more vulnerable to ingesting water, especially if the car is extremely lowered.

Falken Ziex ZE512

Auto Insurance

Among standard all-season tires, the T-rated Yokohama Avid TRZ gets excellent ratings in reviews for wet and dry acceleration and braking, along with a comfortable ride and low noise. A new silica tread compound has improved traction in snow, allowing the tire to remain pliable at lower temperatures. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) verifies that the Yokohama has exceptional treadlife, a claim supported by Yokohama's 80,000-mile treadwear warranty. The Falken Ziex (below) also performs well, but isn't as good in snow and has a shorter treadwear rating.

The Falken Ziex ZE512 are an excellent value, say reviews, but the tradeoff (compared to the Yokohama above) is a shorter 60,000-mile treadwear warranty. The Falken gets excellent scores for wet and dry performance, but the Yokohama is better in snow. Both are handle well, and are exceptionally quiet compared to other tires. If you live in a mild climate, the T-rated Falken Ziex has the edge. For areas that get more snow, the Yokohama Avid TRZ is a slightly better choice, according to reviews.

BF Goodrich Traction T/A

Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3

Moving up to a high-performance tire gets you better handling over other all-season tires, but at the expense of ride and treadlife. Along with the Turanza below, reviews say the Traction A/T all-season tire is the best choice in a long-life, durable, all-weather tire for cars or minivans. In testing, the H-rated BF Goodrich Traction T/A achieves the best balance of performance factors in a comparison with four other popular tires. Reviewers say the Traction T/A strikes a balance of ride quality, wet and dry braking, below-average tread noise and value. The Traction T/A comes in H, T and V speed ratings and carries a 60,000-mile limited treadlife warranty

It's been a good year for the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3, picking up top-rankings in some major reviews, including a recent 11-tire hands-on test at Car and Driver magazine. Like all max-performance tires, the Eagle F1 GS-D3 isn't meant for winter conditions at all, and there is no treadwear warranty. This tire is for the enthusiast who values performance over value.

When Should I Replace my Tires?

Passing the penny test

2/32" remaining tread depth

4/32" remaining tread depth

6/32" remaining tread depth

U.S. coins can be substituted for a tire tread depth gauge as tires wear to the critical final few 32nds of an inch of their remaining tread depth.

Place a penny into several tread grooves across the tire. If part of Lincoln's head is always covered by the tread, you have more than 2/32" of tread depth remaining.

Place a quarter into several tread grooves across the tire. If part of Washington's head is always covered by the tread, you have more than 4/32" of tread depth remaining.

Place a penny into several tread grooves across the tire. If the top of the Lincoln Memorial is always covered by the tread, you have more than 6/32" of tread depth remaining.

The Law

According to most states' laws, tires are legally worn out when they have worn down to 2/32" of remaining tread depth. To help warn drivers that their tires have reached that point, tires sold in North America are required to have indicators molded into their tread design called "wear bars" which run across their tread pattern from their outside shoulder to inside shoulder. Wear bars are designed to visually connect the elements of the tire's tread pattern and warn drivers when their tires no longer meet minimum tread depth requirements.

Common Sense

However, as a tire wears it's important to realize that the tire's ability to perform in rain and snow will be reduced. With 2/32" of remaining tread depth, resistance to hydroplaning in the rain at highway speeds has been significantly reduced, and traction in snow has been virtually eliminated.

If rain and wet roads are a concern, you should consider replacing your tires when they reach approximately 4/32" of remaining tread depth. Since water can't be compressed, you need enough tread depth to allow rain to escape through the tire's grooves. If the water can't escape fast enough, your vehicle's tires will be forced to hydroplane (float) on top of the water, losing traction.

If snow covered roads are a concern, you should consider replacing your tires when they reach approximately 6/32" of remaining tread depth to maintain good mobility. You need more tread depth in snow because your tires need to compress the snow in their grooves and release it as the they roll. If there isn't sufficient tread depth, the "bites" of snow your tires can take on each revolution will be reduced to "nibbles," and your vehicle's traction and mobility will be sacrificed. Because tread depth is such an important element for snow traction, winter tires usually start with noticeably deeper tread depths than typical All-Season or summer tires. Some winter tires even have a second series of "wear bars" molded in their tread pattern indicating approximately 6/32" remaining tread depth to warn you when your tires no longer meet the desired tread depth.

Hot Exotic Cars

Porsche carrera gt

Auto Insurance

Porsche's flagship supercar continues to make its way from design study to dealer showroom. The production version, revealed at the Geneva show in March, is faithful to the original concept, although it differs in detail and is even more powerful.

Relying on a tremendously strong and lightweight monocoque chassis of hand-fabricated carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic, the $440,000 (estimated at current exchange rates) 3043-pound GT's 612-horsepower V-10 reportedly pushes it to 120 mph in just 9.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 205 mph. We expect 0-60-mph runs in the mid-three-second range.

Among the two-seater's many high-tech goodies are a pushrod suspension arrangement, magnesium wheels, and ceramic composite clutch and disc brakes. Elaborate, tunnel-tuned underfloor geometry and an electronically deployed rear wing provide significant downforce for reducing the white-knuckle factor at this car's super-high cruising velocities.

Originally developed for a stillborn endurance racing project, the all-aluminum 5.7-liter engine makes its peak power at 8000 rpm and max torque of 435 lb-ft at 5750. Just 7.1 inches shorter in overall length than the Cayenne SUV, the GT will prove a serious competitor to Ferrari's 660-horsepower Enzo and Mercedes-Benz' upcoming SLR. The GT is also an important statement, reminding everyone that the company isn't interested in yielding its position as one of the world's premier sports-car builders. Porsche has committed to building 1500 Carrera GTs over a three-year period, with approximately half of them headed to North America.

Ford gt

Auto Insurance

The current Ford GT is a modern revival of a classic name and shape from Ford's past. Styling and powertrain layout are based on the GT40s of the '60s. The modern GT is a mid-engine, 2-seat sports car that sports a mid-mounted supercharged 5.4-liter with dual overhead camshafts and 32 valves. This all-aluminum V8 makes 550 horsepower. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission and limited-slip axle. No automatic transmission is available. Like many high-end sports cars, the body is constructed mainly of aluminum and carbon-fiber. Antilock disc brakes are standard and come with electronic brake force distribution to help in panic braking situations.

For '06 Ford's supercar gets a no-extra-cost 40th anniversary special edition to commemorate the company's 1-2-3 finish at LeMans in 1966.

The limited-edition 40th anniversary model comes only in Tungsten Grey. This color replaces Quick Silver on the GT40 color palette. This evaluation is based on closed-course preview drive.

Ferrari f430

Auto Insurance

Ferrari doesn't care to admit there's a horsepower war going on out there. But when its entry-level 360 is making 390 horsepower and just across the Milan-Bologna highway the Lamborghini factory is turning out the Gallardo with 500, something probably had to be done. That something is the F430. Its all-new engine is up to 4.3 liters, from which it kicks out 483 rampant horsepower. And to keep it in check, the suspension gets a host of revisions, most significantly an electronically controlled differential that Ferrari developed for its Formula 1 cars, only to find it was so beneficial it was outlawed.

Formula 1 remains a talisman at Ferrari. You get an engine designed by engineers who have worked on F1, using titanium rods and five valves per cylinder like the 360's but with all components new. The gear changer is a sequential paddle-operated device, again introduced to the road-car world by Ferrari after its F1 experiences. The factory's wind tunnel shares time between the road car and race teams; by its efforts, the F430 gets an extra 200-odd pounds of downforce at top speed with no drag penalty. Optional, and fitted with shattering effect to our test car, are a set of carbon-ceramic brake rotors. Another F1 technology-- see a pattern emerging?

If the greenhouse, doors, and roof are 360 heritages, the rest of the outer skin is new, not just to satisfy our neophilia but to help suck the car to the road and to bring more cooling air to the nasal radiators and combustion air to the cylinders. That last job is done by the intakes atop the rear fenders, a visual reminder of the mid-1960s 250LM. The car's extruded-aluminum structure is all-new aft of the firewall for the latest rear-crash standards. There's also a new front-crash structure, plus new frame bits to boost overall stiffness. Inside the cab, a more finely tooled leather dash faces the occupants. We had the optional carbon-shelled lightweight semi-race seats--standard fit is a more cosseting chair design with electric adjustment. Overall weight is up by about 120 pounds. The extra power more than compensates.

The engine is faster wherever, whenever you want. The capacity increase brings a notable muscling-up of the torque curve, meaning you no longer need to obsess on the redline but can reserve an extra portion of mental bandwidth for the other (reasonably urgent) tasks required in operating a Ferrari. This significant character change is reinforced by the new soundscape. Where the old unit had many voices depending on revs and load, culminating in a hard-edged yowl that could drill concrete, the new one sings a deeper baritone, more rhythmic and rising homogeneously in excitement all the way to its roaring 8500-rpm limit.
